How to Choose the Right Tomato

Writer: Arona Road GreenhouseArona Road Greenhouse

Now that you've mastered growing tomatoes, it's time to pick the perfect variety for your garden. Not sure where to start? Think about how you love to enjoy tomatoes—whether it’s in fresh salads, hearty sauces, or straight off the vine. Once you’ve decided, selecting the right type becomes much easier. Here’s a simple guide to help you choose.

Popular Tomato Varieties

  • Roma or Plum (Paste) Tomatoes: Known for their dense, meaty texture, these are perfect for rich sauces or salsas. Top picks include San Marzano and Amish Paste.

  • Cherry & Grape Tomatoes: Sweet, bite-sized, and ideal for snacking or tossing into salads. Try varieties like Sun Gold, Sweet 100, or Juliet.

  • Beefsteak Tomatoes: Large, juicy, and made for sandwiches and burgers. Favorites include Brandywine and Cherokee Purple.

  • Globe Tomatoes: Round, medium-sized, and versatile—great for slicing or salads. Popular options include Celebrity and Early Girl.

Choose a variety that suits your cooking style, and you’ll enjoy a garden bursting with flavor.

Tomato Growth Types

Tomatoes also come in two distinct growth patterns:

  • Determinate: These compact plants grow to a set height and produce all their fruit at once, making them perfect for small spaces or container gardens.

  • Indeterminate: These vining varieties grow and produce fruit continually throughout the season. They require more space and support, such as stakes or cages.
